Interesting myths from the ‘Mythbusters’ Discovery Channel show

Over at the wonderful Wikipedia, I found just the thing I was looking for: a clear list of the myths that have been tested on the Discovery Channel show “Mythbusters”, and what the results were. Some of the most interesting to me:

  • Using a cell phone at the gas station won’t cause an explosion. a charge from a person might though.
  • Peeing on an electric fence can electrocute you. (because you’re so close to it)
  • Cola works really good to clean chrome and pennies
  • Daddy-long-legs spiders can bite through your skin, but aren’t poisonous
  • Tomato juice only masks a skunks smell. The best working formula:
    • 1 U.S. Quart (approx 1 litre) of 3% hydrogen peroxide
    • 1/4 cup (approx 45ml) baking soda
    • 1 teaspoon (approx 5ml) liquid soap
  • A jawbreaker will explode when put into a microwave
  • Any continuous sound will help plants grow (not just talking)
  • Over 20 feet, a toy car will beat a Dodge Viper in a race, but over 1/4 mile, the Viper wins no contest
  • a fire extinguisher will cool a 6-pack of beer in 3 seconds
  • Driving while on a cell phone is just as dangerous as driving drunk
  • Hiding under 3 feet of water will stop high-velocity bullets, under 8 feet will stop lower velocity ones
  • A gas tank will not explode if shot with a regular bullet
  • The ‘5-second-rule’ is not effective in food dropped ont he floor
  • The toilet seat is the cleanest place int he house, and a dog’s mouth is cleaner than a humans
  • Vodka will eliminate odor from feet
  • Driving with the tailgate down on a truck actually increases drag
