The End

It’s probably much too early to accurately assess how the Pistons’ season ended, much less why it ended, but here goes a quick reaction:

  1. Congrats to the better team, the Miami Heat
  2. Seriously consider not re-signing Ben Wallace
  3. Seriously consider not bringing back Flip Saunders
  4. I think it’s time to break up the starting 5
  5. Flip, play some reserves
  6. Pistons, check your egos
  7. Start backing up your words with some action
  8. How about trying to bring it, even if just for the fans (135+ straight sellouts?)
  9. Hmm, let’s see, walking the ball up the court, having Rasheed and Tayshaun finally catch up to you with 12 seconds left in the shot clock, and you lose games. Gee, maybe it’s time to start running some fast break plays? Ever? Once in a damn series??? Flip??? Hello????
  10. Get some rest. Heal up. Make some changes. Earn my attention next year. I’ll follow. I’ll support. But I won’t be as adamant, because I don’t feel like championing lackluster effort.

I just couldn’t believe it. Game 5 gave me some hope. But i lost it with the very first basket that Detroit stood back and watched Miami score. I swear they decided to just give it to them in the hall before the game. Just a poor, poor effort. Not to take away from the amazing job Miami did, though. They made shots, Detroit didn’t. Game. Conference championship. We’ll see how they do against Dallas.

    Amen. I feel your pain…

Like you said, I think the biggest factor was the lack of a sustained effort through the last 2 series. That could very well be Saunders fault, but I dont think he needs to lose his job. The guy knows basketball, he brought more offensive prowess to the PIstons than we’ve seen in years. I think he can, and should take charge of the lockerroom and get the guys motivated.

I think we’ll probably see the same starting 5 next year. As much as I love Rasheed, I wouldn’t mind seeing him go. I’ve grown tired of his antics. It was entertaining while they were winning, but now I just don’t see the point. The Ben Wallace situation is an interesting one. Ben is a unrestricted free agent, and I think we should resign him. But how much is he really worth top us? How much will he be offered elsewhere? I can’t help thinking that Ben wouldn’t be as big of an assett on another team. He has always the emotional leader of the team, rebounding everything and playing great defense. It’s worked great in Detroit, because our team is built on defense. His rebounding has been essential because the Pistons thrive on limiting opponents possessions. How many other teams would sacrifice offensive production in their center and bring in Wallace? I’m sure he’ll get great offers, but I dont think he’ll see the success that he’s enjoyed in Detroit.

Ben Wallace definitely won’t see the success elsewhere, but I do think he’ll see dollars. I think a team like Chicago would bring him in. I don’t think he’d go to Toronto for any amount of money (that they’d be willing to offer).

One situation I think is intriguing is Minnesota’s growing interest in getting rid of Kevin Garnett. I think Joe Dumars needs to jump all over that if he can. Wallace & Wallace for Garnett would be a great trade. Billups and Hamilton, plus Prince, Garnett and hmm, Kelvin Cato? I think McDyess, if he doesn’t retire, should continue to come off the bench. But Detroit needs a true center. But Flip’s knowledge of Garnett would make for a fair enough trade in the positions.

Who knows what will happen. But one thing should happen, the Pistons need to learn, and they need to play. Ok, that’s two things. But first of all, they need to play all their guys in the regular season equally because they know they can g deep in the playoffs, so why worry so much about home court in the conference finals and the finals? If your players are rested, you can win anywhere. And you’re going to have to win at least one on the road anyways.

But gosh, it really would have been nice to win another championship smewhat close to the 04-05 one so that it doesn’t seem like a fluke.
