Taxes with a box

Shan and I are using TurboTax to do our taxes this year….we think. Shan did hers up and wasn’t quite sure that the results were what they were supposed to be. I’ll be doing mine in the next few days.

Has anyone else used these programs? What do you think, would you recommend them?

  1. I’ve used TurboTax, TaxCut and TaxAct. I think they’re all pretty equivalent, though I prefer TaxCut’s interface. TaxAct offers free federal e-file, which is a big plus in my book.

If you’re worried about the numbers being wrong, I suggest you use 2 different programs and compare results. Entering all the information twice can be a bummer if your taxes are complicated, but it’s a good way to make sure your taxes are being done right.

You can use TaxAct over the web. There’s a standalone application you can download, too, though I’ve never used it. You can download TaxCut Basic for free at:

  2. I’ve had no problems with TurboTax. There is also a free online version if you make a certain income requirement.

I would NOT recommend HR Block. We got ripped off there. They don’t tell you their pricing (which I guess was my fault, I should have asked). We went there last year because we had a rather complicated return and it was pretty reasonable.

But this year we had more forms and the price went up by about 500%. And the “Specialist” had to keep looking in a “Quick Tips” book. I guess the software they use is pretty much what you buy in the store. She had a few good tips but it wasn’t worth the price and having to sit there 2.5 hours.
