Felt more like a Disney feel-good film than a Best-Picture nominee. Sandra Bullock did well for the part, but definitely not Best Actor-worthy. Entertaining, though far-fetched. Seems like they embellished the true story a bit too much.

Very entertaining though not too substantial. The movie has a message but it didn't seem to hit home very well. Overall pretty good acting though it was another George Clooney cookie cutter performance (which isn't necessarily a bad thing.)

Avatar (2009)
6/10
Most anticipated movie ever... that didn't live up to the hype. The effects are phenomenal, over-the-top to the extent that they steal away from any of the actors and even the plot itself. I was mainly asking myself "How did they do that?" throughout the whole thing. Predictable, corny at times, and not worth the time or money spent to make it.

Excellent movie. Robert Downey Jr. takes it as usual. The dialogue is so heavily accented that it's hard to catch at times, but overall the writing is top-notch. The plot is a bit wanky, dealing with magic and unnecessary crazy devices, but that doesn't detract from an overall enjoyable experience.

The Men Who Stare at Goats (2009)
2/10
Despite the all-star cast, this movie sucked. I laughed at a few ridiculous moments, but mostly I was waiting for it to be over with. Terrible story, terrible acting, terrible writing. Stay away. Mandatory stars for George Clooney and Jeff Bridges being in it.

Step Brothers (2008)
6/10
Predictably funny in parts, but overall not a great movie, even for a stupid comedy. The plot is unbelievable and the actors all try too hard. Weird ending as well. Ho hum.

Pirate Radio (2009)
5/10
Very slow, more of a love story than anything, really. Kind of unbelievable and sensational, but has its good moments. The soundtrack is the best part of the movie. And some of the pretty women. But I won't miss not seeing it ever again.

Big Fish (2003)
8/10
A great story about stories. I'm an emotional guy, but I dare someone to see this and not get teary eyed at the ending. It's a celebration of family, fantasy and adventure. It's a great ride and a good message. I recommend everyone see this at least once.

Jackie Brown (1997)
9/10
Based off the novel Rum Punch by Elmore Leonard, Tarrantino does an excellent job writing this for the screen. Very unlike his popular movies but still carrying his unique touch, this is an awesome nod to blacksploitation films, cop dramas and love stories. Pam Grier, Robert Forster and Samuel L. Jackson all play great parts, supported by the always excellent Robert DeNiro and (Batman, himself) Michael Keaton. Buy it, watch it over and over.

Airport (1970)

Quite intriguing for a 1970s movie. Watched it because it had Dean Martin as one of the plane captains. It's like Airplane but serious.

Star Trek (2009)
8/10
Excellent Star Trek movie, very good movie-movie. It had a great mix of action, intrigue, emotion and comedy. The effects were great and were excellently employed throughout. The plot was easily followed and was tailored for both Trekkies and regular folks. Recommended.

State of Play (2009)

Interesting story but a little slow moving and too much switching around of the plot. I can't get past Russel Crowe's Gladiator-like pauses and facial expressions. Put it at the middle of your Netflix queue.

This movie is really a comedy, though it's very slight of hand about it. THe dialogue will give it away, but it's the commentary about the 80s that really sets it off. Without knowing better, you woudl think this WAS filmed in the 80s. Oh yeah, and lots of blood.

Chop Shop (2007)

Very well done documentary-yet-not about a 12 year old boy making his own living in Queens, NY. The boy is a genius actor, and the semi-transparent story is very well told. Check it out now!

Powerful message, less than stellar execution. For an Indy-film it's quite good, but the scope isn't tackled as well as I would have thought. Worth seeing though.

Tibet: Cry of the Snow Lion (2002)
8/10
Does a great job of explaining the history of Tibet as well as the Tibetan people's view of its Chinese occupation. Also includes videos and statements from Chinese officials who are opposed to these notions. Excellent documentary and recommended to all.

Watchmen (2009)

Great adaptation, but not perfect. Thing is, nothing can live up to the comic book, which is a masterpiece of its medium. Still a great ride and definitely worth seeing.

The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
9/10
One of the best movies of all time. I don't particularly like Tim Robbins -- he doesn't hardly open his mouth when he talks, it's annoying to me -- but for what he lacks, Morgan Freeman more than makes up for. Emotional, exciting, and long without feeling like it is. Highly recommended.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008)
7/10
I really liked the Hellboy movies. They have a lot of action, zany characters and good effects. The stories are a little wonky, but once you get past that, it's a fun movie.

Escape from Alcatraz (1979)
7/10
I like Prison-escape movies for some reason, and this is one of the best I've seen. "Squint" Eastwood is good as the smart criminal, and it has enough emotion in it to be more than just a prison movie.

2009-01-11 06:47
Hancock (2008)
5/10
The best part about this movie was the effects. But they had to be decent at least, since it's a superhero movie. The story sucked, which was a major let down. Will Smith did ok, but it all seemed to rush by too quick. And the story twist near the end? Come on.

Cast Away (2000)
8/10
Not one of the most critically acclaimed movies of all time, but one of my most favorite. It's amazing what they went through to tell this story, and the ending is very moving and I relate to it very much. Some over-acting, but generally great.

Super Size Me (2004)

Made me want to go get some McDonalds. Really. Not very much of his experiment is shown, but I guess I don't want to see him throw up everyday. Worth seeing if you eat too much fast food.

Get Smart (2008)

I like Steve Carell even when he's not at his best so I liked this. The humor falls flat a lot of the times, but there are a few laugh out loud moments. Worth a rent.

Super Sucker (2002)
2/10
Wow, what a terrible movie. Starring Jeff Daniels, it was filmed in Jackson, MI. It tries to be funy by making every low-class sex joke it can. But the over-acting and horrible characterizations make it one of the worst movies ever. Stay away.

Superbad (2007)

Pretty funny, I laughed out loud quite a few times. It's basically high school humor, but the characters are so extreme that it's very entertaining. Watch it some Friday night with some beers and some friends.

Hellboy (2004)
7/10
I like Hellboy. Maybe I'm biased because it's a comic book adaptation and I like comics, but this is a movie that really doesn't take itself too seriously, but still is pretty bad-ass. Got a little boring at parts while it explored the story.

2008-08-16 22:40
This was a pretty funny movie, and I was laughing pretty consistently throughout. A lot of the funny for me was around the edges of the movie: backgrounds, facial expressions, action sequences, etc. Recommended, but not a masterpiece of cinema.

Semi-Pro (2008)

Part of my new harsher ratings system, this movie wasn't that good. Maybe watching drunk on the sixth showing would make it better. A few hilarious lines, but not worth buying, definitely.

The Dark Knight (2008)

Maybe not the best movie ever, but worthy of a 10 on my scale. The best Batman movie ever, if anything. It was done extremely well, and was very faithful to the comics. Highly recommended.

Batman: Gotham Knight (2008) (V)

WALL·E (2008)

I cried during this movie. Not because it was sad (it was,) but because I was laughing so hard. You might not laugh as hard as I did, but it's a funny, good movie. One of the best I've ever seen.

Cloverfield (2008)
8/10
Actually much creepier than I thought it would be. I was expecting more action than thriller/suspense. But it was pretty well done, and just short enough to where you don't get tired of it. Beware of motion sickness, however.

Iron Man (2008)

Smart People (2008)
7/10
This was a pretty good movie. I wish it was a little more fleshed out and maybe a little ore intentionally funny, though. It's mainly just a look inside someone's life, at a crazy, pivotal point. But Thomas Hayden Church did wonders for the comedic side of this movie.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet...

It's a musical. Let's get that right out of the way. Once the initial chuckle was out of the way, the rest of the movie went by fairly quickly. It was good to see the story and I liked Tim Burton's take on everything,

The Transformers: The Movie (1986)
5/10
This was a sad, sad movie back in 1986. I think I might have cried when Optimus Prime died. Now it's just funny because of the 80's rock music. It was cool to hear Orson Welles last performance (as Unicron, the devourer of worlds.)

Transformers (2007)
9/10
Excellent, excellent movie!
0.3I gave this a 10because they did as good a job as possible in converting a concept like Transformers into a live-action movie. And there isn't much at all I would have changed. Far exceeded my expectations, and set a new standard for comic/cartoon-to-live-action movies. Rating dropped 1 star (1/09) June, 2007

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's...

Not bad! But not great, either. Keira Knightly played too big of a part, and Johnny Depp wasn't in it enough. Slightly worse than the second, and not even close to the first movie. But still a fun movie to watch. Reduced 1 star (7/09)

Miami Vice (2006)
4/10
Boring. One scene had my attention (where they storm the trailer park,) but otherwise this was barely watchable. I had to have subtitles on to understand what anyone was saying, and Colin Farrell's accent was coming through way too much. Not enough of an homage to the great TV show. Rating dropped 1 star (1/09)

Spider-Man 3 (2007)
3/10
Avoid this movie. Too long, waaay too corny, and not enough action. A couple of the scenes were pretty cool, but it doesn't give the characters or history enough credit. I hope they give this series a rest. Rating dropped 2 stars (1/09)

Stranger Than Fiction (2006)

Perhaps the longest movie ever, or maybe it just seemed that way. Not your typical Will Farrell movie (I wasn't expecting it to be,) but still at least mildly entertaining. Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby...

Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for...
7/10
Funny movie. Sacha Baron Cohen does a great job in his Borat character. The offensive parts are really critiques on the darker side of the USA (racism, feminism, other forms of discrimination.) And the hotel room scene has to be seen to be believed.

Rocky Balboa (2006)

This was pretty much what the last Rocky movie should be. An homage to the past movies, recognition of the aging Stallone, and that same Rocky 1 flavor of a run-down city and a down-to-earth man who just wants to do what feels right in his heart. Recommended. Rating dropped 1 star (1/09)

This movie was
0.3awesomevery cool to see in the theater. It was a little rough around the edges when compared to the comic, but I don't think changing any of that stuff would have made a better movie experienceand making a better story would have helped its longevity immensely. Cars (2006)
7/10
An alright Pixar movie, but a little boring. There were a few hilarious parts (car with 5 fins), but this seemed like too much of a ploy to get in on the NASCAR hype. Update 1/09: Saw it again, liked it more. Rating raised 1 star for longevity

X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)
6/10
Definitely the worst of the three X-Men movies, but not a bad movie by itself. Lots of action, but maybe too much?

Loved the book, liked the movie. It was the first time I've ever read a book before the movie, so it was fun to compare them. I think they did an excellent job in adapting it, as well as they could do for the story.

Pretty political and futuristic, but I liked Natalie Portman and the guy playing...uhh..Guy Fawkes.
